GWS migrations: update
Posted by: CEDA Helpdesk 1 week, 3 days ago
We would like to thank all our Group Workspace (GWS) managers and users for bearing with us while we migrate some workspaces to newer storage. This is progressing well, and GWS managers should have received information about the new locations of their workspaces.
As a user, please check with your GWS manager who should be able to keep you informed about your workspace.
We anticipate completing these migrations very soon: with such a large amount of data to move, and some workspaces containing many millions of small files, some migrations are taking longer than anticipated, but our target for completion is before the end of May 2018 by which time we need to have decomissioned the previous storage hardware.
One detail to be aware of is that GWS locations beginning "/group_workspaces/jasmin4" are now AUTOMOUNTED.
This means that they are not mounted on a particular host until the moment they are first accessed. Requesting a directory listing or tab auto-completion at that top level will NOT reveal the presence of the workspace directory until it has been accessed for the first time. Requesting a listing of the FULL path to the workspace causes it to be mounted: this is evident in a short delay before the listing is returned.
This also explains why, when listing the top level directory "/group_workspaces/jasmin4", different combinations of GWSs appear to be present on the different sci* or xfer* servers. In fact, the workspaces are there, and will appear on first access, as described above.
Thanks for your understanding while we complete the exciting upgrades associated with JASMIN Phase 4 (http://www.jasmin.ac.uk/phase4)
